The Evolution of Pinotage: South Africa’s Signature Grape

Pinotage is not just a grape; it’s a testament to the visionary spirit of South Africa’s winemaking community. This story traces the evolution of Pinotage from an experimental crossing to becoming South Africa’s signature varietal, with a special focus on the pivotal role played by Bellevue Estate. Join us as we explore how collaboration and innovation turned a dream into an iconic symbol of the wine world.
A Close Call:
After Perold’s departure to KWV, his experimental plants in his university backyard were nearly destroyed, saved only by his successor’s intervention. The seedlings were relocated to Elsenburg Agricultural College under the care of Professor Charl Theron de Waal, who would later produce the first barrel of Pinotage wine in 1941. Tragically, Perold passed away that same year, never tasting the wine made from his creation.
Bellevue’s Bold Decision:
Enter P.K. Morkel of Bellevue Estate, a man whose diverse talents ranged from viticulture to rugby. In 1953, faced with a shortage of Gamay Noir cuttings for new plantings, Morkel was persuaded to take a chance on the little-known Pinotage. This decision marked a turning point for the varietal. Bellevue’s soils and microclimate proved ideal, and the experimental wines produced showcased exceptional fragrance and depth.

The Coronation of a Queen:
Morkel’s gamble paid off spectacularly in 1959 when his Pinotage wine won the prestigious South African Young Wine Show, heralding Pinotage as a varietal of commercial promise. This recognition was not just a victory for Bellevue but a validation of Perold’s dream. The award-winning 1959 vintage, sold in bulk to Stellenbosch Farmer’s Winery, eventually became the first wine to bear the Pinotage name on a commercial label under the Lanzerac brand in 1961.
A Legacy Cemented:
This momentous event set the stage for Pinotage to become a global ambassador for South African wine. Bellevue Estate, from its strategic decisions in the vineyard to its role in promoting Pinotage, has been integral in shaping the destiny of this varietal. Today, as we celebrate over 60 years since that landmark vintage, Bellevue continues to innovate and inspire, carrying forward the legacy of those visionary individuals.
