National Sangria Day

Did you know that National Sangria Day is a thing? Neither did we! But apparently, it’s celebrated annually on December 20th. Who would have thought? In honor of this festive day, we wanted to share some information about the history and origins of sangria. Sangria is a drink that has been around for centuries, and its popularity continues to grow. So what is it exactly that makes sangria so special? Let’s explore…
The History of Sangria
Sangria was first introduced in Europe by the Phoenicians and Greeks. It was made with wine, sugar, spices, and fruits. This mixture was called hippocras and it served as a precursor to mulled wine.
As time went on, red wine punches became popular all over Europe during the 1700s and 1800s. The punch base would usually be claret—a British term for Bordeaux wine from Bordeaux, France. Other ingredients like brandy and fruit were added to give it extra flavour.
Today’s sangria is still based on this traditional recipe but can also include other liquors or juices.
